Partners and cooperation

The consortium is composed of four partners:

  • a national research institute specialised in archaeological and architectonic studies, in survey projects and in conservation planning: CNR-ITABC, Rome, Italy;

  • two government bodies for the protection and restoration of cultural heritage: 13th Superintendency of Byzantine Antiquities in the Crete Region, Greece, and the Restoration Unit in Malta;

  • a local administrative political body participating in the exploitation and management of the town's architectural heritage (Municipality of Castellammare del Golfo, Italy).

The main pivot of the project is the co-operative structure of the partner countries, founded upon a real scientific synergy among experts, carried out through mechanisms of systematic sharing by all those involved in developing the method.
Co-operative scientific action will involve all the groups in preparing a General Progress Report illustrating the criteria and protocols for the documentation of these fortified towns.

The added value of European cooperation

The project focuses on the coordination and integration of the skills possessed by groups of experts and technicians from different European countries operating on a heritage built up over the centuries on common cultural and technical bases.
The common conservation objectives and the exchange of comparable experiences encourages true synergism among the groups and ensures that the results of the project will be multiplied.

Beneficiaries

The beneficiaries of the project will be:

  • the local corporate body involved in safeguarding, planning and managing the architectural heritage of the citadels;

  • local regional, national and international decision-makers, politicians, planners;

  • local, regional and national technicians, professionals and enterprises operating in the restoration sector.
