The Restoration Unit (within the Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure)

The Restoration Unit has been set up in 1996, and it presently has a total staff complement of over 150 employees, in the professional, technical, industrial and administrative levels, including restoration architects, an archaeologist and a historian, photogrammetry technicians, and a group of workers trained in restoration skills.
The Unit, which has the responsibility of carrying out interventions on Government-owned Forts, Fortifications and Historic Buildings, has executed several restoration projects on some of the most prestigious XVIth - XVIIIth century structures in Malta.
The Restoration Unit has also successfully co-participated in EU-funded research projects with other foreign Institutions.


Norbert Gatt

After graduating as Architect and Civil Engineer from the University of Malta in 1992, Architect Gatt furthered his studies at the Scuola di Specializzazione di Restauro dei Monumenti, Universita' degli Studi "La Sapienza" of Rome, which he completed in 1996. Since then, Mr. Gatt has been working at the Works Division, Malta, and has assisted in the setting up of the Restoration Unit, which he now heads.
During these years, as restoration architect he has been responsible for the execution of several restoration and conservation projects on prestigious historic buildings in Malta.
He has attended several international conferences and seminars related to the restoration field, and is also member of ICOMOS.
